The Pros And Cons Of Windows And Linux

Posted By on January 2, 2012

If you are looking for an alternative to Windows, Linux offers a great OS that has many features. Though it is technologically advanced, Linux does not require you to have a degree in computer programming as generally anybody can operate it. Yet not everyone will necessarily prefer Linux; it depends on your needs and what kind of tasks you use your computer for. To help you decide whether Linux or Windows is best for you, we’ll compare some of their respective features in this article.

The most obvious advantage that Windows has over Linux is ease of use. This is mostly because Microsoft is now the world’s most popular operating system by more than just a little bit. This is why most of the computer programs and applications that you can buy have been built and designed to work on Windows operating systems. If you like to play some games, to use one example, it’s highly likely that you will need a computer with a Windows based operating system to play them. There are a few ways that you can get a Windows based application to run on a Linux system but this requires more technological know how and decidedly more effort than it would take to simply use a PC on which Windows has been installed. For a casual computer user who only wants to run the programs that are the most popular, Windows is definitely more convenient.

Have you heard of Ubuntu? This is a popular operating system that utilizes Linux. Let’s talk a little bit about this. This OS actually comes on a CD and you operate it from the CD without any type of installation. Imagine that! By doing this, you can see if you really want to use this OS on your computer. If you are looking for something simple, that you can load very rapidly, you should try out Ubuntu. If you are looking for an OS that is not as demanding as Windows, Ubuntu could be the alternative that you are looking for. New features are added to this OS regularly and the updates are a breeze. Basically, Ubuntu is helping make Linux OS more assessable to the general public.

Linux provides many educational tools that can help people learn. Many schools have found that installing Linux on their computers is the best solution to provide their students with the best possible resources for learning. Of course, the fact that Linux software is free is a great advantage in this area all by itself, especially in a time when many schools are facing budget cuts. Microsoft Windows is still the most popular operating system on the planet, though this may change as times get more difficult and Linux continues to improve. If you want to really know if Windows or Linux is better for you, you may want to try out a Linux operating system such as Ubuntu. Simply find a Windows-based computer, load Ubuntu onto another and make a comparison based upon your own experience. If a person has two computers, they could actually use one with Linux and leave the other one with Windows. Personal preference will be the ultimate reason that you choose one operating system over the other.
